The plant is popular for its showy flowers that appear in the fall, long after most other plants have finished blooming. Colchicum is native to Europe, North Africa and parts of Asia. In the past, the Colchicum was used for medicinal purposes. The name Colchicum comes from a region in ancient Greece where the plant grew.
We have many types of Colchicum in our range, some popular types are:
- Colchicum autumnale: this is the most common species that blooms in autumn with light purple flowers. The flowers often appear without leaves, which gives them a mystical appearance. The leaves appear in spring and die in early summer.
- Colchicum speciosum: the Speciosum is a large and striking flower species. This species also blooms in the fall, but the flowers are usually darker in color, ranging from deep pink to purple. Colchicum speciosum has wider and longer leaves than Colchicum autumnale, which also appear in spring.
- Colchicum byzantinum: This is another popular species that blooms in the fall. This species produces many bright pink flowers that form a beautiful color. Colchicum byzantinum is winter hardy and does well in various soil types, provided the drainage is good.
The Colchicum grows best in a sunny to semi-shaded position. They need well-drained soil as they do not like wet soil. A light, sandy soil is ideal.
Colchicum bulbs are planted in late summer to early fall. Make sure you plant the bulbs about 10 to 15 cm deep with a distance of 15 cm between them. This ensures they have plenty of room to grow and spread. Make sure the tip of the ball is pointing up.
After planting it is important to water the bulbs well. Although Colchicum do not like soil that is too wet, they need sufficient moisture in the beginning to be able to root well. During dry periods in autumn it is advisable to water occasionally, especially when flowering begins.
Once planted, the Colchicum requires minimal maintenance. They are quite self-reliant and require little extra care.
Colchicum does not need heavy fertilization. A light application of a fertilizer in the spring is sufficient. This helps to provide the bulbs with necessary nutrients for next season's growth.
The leaves of the Colchicum appear in spring and die in early summer. It is important not to cut the leaves too early, because they need the sun's energy to charge the bulbs for the next season. Wait until the leaves have completely yellowed before removing.
Colchicum can easily be propagated by dividing the bulbs. This is best done in late summer or early fall, when the bulbs are dormant. Dig up the bulbs, separate the new bulbs from the mother bulb and replant them at the same depth as before.
