Trillium
Trillium is derived from the Latin word tri (three). This is because both the leaf and the flower consist of three parts. Origin: Siberia, Korea, Japan and China. A few species are found in the western part of the Himalayas, but most occur in large parts of north-eastern America. Trillium is recognised by its bare flower stems, three leaves forming a wreath, three prominent petals and three bracts. The underground part consists of a thickened rhizome with lateral eyes (new shoots). The rhizomes vary considerably in size, depending on the species. It may remain latent for the first year after planting. The location should be moist and cool, a shaded spot, for example as undergrowth.
