A Goliath among the many hybrids is a true species viz. Canna tuerckheimii (syn: C.altensteinii), which can grow to a height of as much as 3.00 -3.50 m depending on conditions. The thickly fleshy stems feature large banana-like leaves with an inflorescence consisting of orange-red flowers at the end. Once well established with high water and food requirements, new shoots are formed regularly and can flower until frost. Once the first night frost has felled the plant, the stems can be cut to the ground after which the root system can be uprooted to overwinter frost-free. Another option is to cover the clump with a good layer of leaves, with a piece of plastic over it.
