The Duc van Tol tulip was introduced by the firm W.J. Eldering & Son of Overveen in 1850, first under the name Tulipa 'Dolphin'. But became "because of its very early flowering, which falls about the same as that of Duc van Tholl varieties, under the name Duc van Tholl Scharlacken one of the best known and most cultivated species."
